The Yobe Committee on Resettlement, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons on Wednesday distributed 18,200 bags of rice, 1,020 Jerry cans of cooking oil to IDPs and vulnerable persons.
Abubakar Aliyu, the Deputy Governor and Chairman of the committee, who was represented by Alhaji Muhammad Lamin, Commissioner for Education and member of the committee, launched the distribution in Damaturu.
He said 280 bags of sugar, 120 bags of beans, 170 bales of used clothes and toiletries were also distributed among the 17 local government areas of the state.
The deputy governor said the materials were donated to the state by Nigeria Customs Service and the Presidential Committee on Northeast Initiative (PCNI).
He added that the Yobe Government spent N67.8 million on transportation of materials donated from various stores in different parts of the country.
He said committees were constituted in the 17 local government areas of the state for distribution of materials to local communities and Gujba Local Government had the highest allocation of 2,000 bags of rice, 100 Jerry cans of oil, 20 bags of sugar and 20 bags of beans.
Alhaji Musa Jidawa, the Permanent Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said the distribution was done on the basis of severity and size of IDPs and vulnerable persons in the local government areas.
“We have put monitoring mechanisms on ground to ensure safe delivery of the materials, for fair and equitable distribution to the target groups.
“Government would sanction local government committees found to have diverted the materials,” Jidawa added. (NAN)
