Arewa Consultative Forum is saddened and disturbed with the recent communal clash between some suspected herdsmen and communities at Agatu in Benue state, which led to the death of about a hundred people and properties destroyed.
The incessant and unnecessary clashes among communities that have lived together peacefully for decades is unfortunate and worrisome.
ACF therefore highly commends the prompt step taken by President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate not only the factors behind the Agatu killings but the root causes of communal clashes in Benue state. This is a good development and should also extend to the recent Ibi killings in Taraba state.
ACF urges the Federal Government to fast truck the investigation into the Agatu killings in order to re-assure the people of its seriousness to deal with the perpetrators of these heinous crimes to serve as deterrent to others. ACF equally calls on the warring communities to embrace dialogue and give peace a chance for a meaningful development to take place. The Agatu communities should also listen to wise counsel of Governor Samuel Ortom to support and assist the security agencies in their investigations.
ACF extends its condolences to the Government and people of Benue state over this unfortunate clash that has consumed the lives of innocent people, particularly the communities of Agatu.
