Ahmad Elected as CAF President
African Football has a new leader in Ahmad, who ousted long-time incumbent Issa Hayatou in last week Thursday’s confederation of African Football presidential election.
The CAF presidential elections in Addis Ababa was the third time in 29 years that Hayatou faces a rival for the top job in African football as he seeks an eighth term at the head of the continent’s game.
His two previous challengers went down in flames with just a handful of votes and have faded into subsequent obscurity.
But the feat that Angola’s Armando Machado in 2000 and Ismail Bhamjee of Botswana in 2004 have failed to reach was achieved last week by Ahmad Ahmad Of Madagascar.
That was not an easy task against Isa Hayatou, whose name had become synonymous to CAF, not even after acting as president of the world football ruling body.
But Ahmad’s supporters have whipped up a lively campaign and with the tacit support of new FIFA President Gianni Infantino Ahmad got the desire result.
Ahmad, 57, ended the 29 year old reign of Hayatou, a senior Vice President of FIFA, by garnering 34 votes ahead of Hayatou’s 20.
Ahmad, previously minister of sport and minister of fisheries in Madagascar, had been given little chance just a month ago when he announced his candidacy.
But he offered voters a fresh face to a younger generation of soccer association presidents that have emerged.
The 57-year-old father of two had a discreet playing and coaching career before he took over as the head of the Madagascar Football Federation in 2003.
