The Sokoto State Government has recruited 550 youths to clean up drainage and rid waterways of blockages so as to prevent flooding, according to an official of the Ministry of Environment.
Malam Abubakar Abdullahi, Public Relations Officer of the ministry, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Sokoto that the workers would also evacuate waste, sweep streets and maintain public hygiene in the capital city.
He said that the measure was also intended to take the youths off the streets, adding that they would complement the monthly sanitation programmes of the state government.
The official commended Gov. Aminu Tambuwal for his employment generation policies, noting that the mass recruitment of sanitation workers would have multiplier effects on the health and economic sectors.
“We have started seeing the fruits of the policy; the refuse heaps have disappeared. The roads are clean and everyone is happy,” he said. (NAN)
