Education Minister, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai has urged Universities Governing Councils to explore other sources of revenue other than Government allocations for the smoothrunning of the Institutions. This was at the inauguration of governing councils of twenty one Federal Universities in Abuja.
Over the years, the university system has been facing numerous challenges. These include inadequate human resources and physical infrastructure, unstable academic calendar, decline in academic standard and poor management of funds. It is against this background that the Federal Government appointed these Nigerians, described as men and women of proven integrity to ensure good management, growth and development in Nigerian Universities. Council members are expected to adopt best practices and monitor institutional projects to improve facilities and infrastructure for teaching and learning.
Chief Don Etiebet promised that the councils would address the issues of streamlining educational programmes in the various universities. The Councils have four year tenures from the date of inauguration.
