President Goodluck Jonathan and his counterparts from Uganda, Sri-Lanka and Rwanda have given their support for the stregthening of Local Government Administration as a means of achieving sustainable development. The four leaders made their views known at the 2013 Commonwealth Local Government Conference which ended in Kampala Uganda.
President Jonathan who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter Government Affairs, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita made a strong case for autonomy for Local Governments to enable them serve the people at the grassroots.
Declaring the Conference open, host President Yoweri Museveni said that Uganda introduced decentralization to strengthen local government as a way of empowering communities to participate in development. At the end of the conference with the theme: “Developmental Local Government”, New Delhi, India was chosen to host the next edition of the conference in 2015.
