Did Hitler Use Chemical Weapons on His People? Yes He Did

Did Hitler Use Chemical Weapons on His People? Yes He Did

Today will be a little lesson in history –

When the White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer, told reporters Concerning Assad of Syria that, “You had someone who is despicable as Hitler who didn’t even sink to using chemical weapons,”turned heads in the White House briefing room during a discussion of the situation in Syria when he wrongly claimed that Adolf Hitler did not use chemical weapons.

He turned heads, not just of journalists but of historians. In that White House briefing room during a discussion of the situation in Syria, he was ABSOLUTELY wrong after claiming that Adolf Hitler did not use chemical weapons.

Adolf Hitler was, in fact, the first to gas people en masse. He was the demon of gassing human being en masse, except if Sean Spicer was looking at an alternative fact on Hitler’s history.

Based on the facts check and detailed analysis from politifact.com, Spicer attempted to clarify his point when pressed by reporters vainly.

“He was not using the gas on his own people the same way that Assad is doing,” Spicer said. “He brought them into the Holocaust centers, I understand that. But (not) in the way that Bashar al-Assad used them where he went into towns, dropped them down, into the middle of towns.”

We believe Holocaust centers refers to concentration camps.

As for the rest of Spicer’s statement, there is a reason Nazis and Hitler became synonymous with the term gas chamber. That’s because they pumped hydrogen cyanide gas into the killing rooms packed with Jews, Roma, and others singled out for extermination by Nazi leaders. At concentration camps such as Auschwitz, Mauthausen and Sachsenhausen, Jews were taken from cattle cars and forced into “showers,” where guards released the gas. At the height of deportations, an estimated 6,000 Jews died each day in the Auschwitz gas chambers.

Spicer appears to be trying to limit his definition of chemical weapons to those dropped from planes or fired through cannons, as Assad has been alleged to have done. That sells short the definition in the Chemical Weapons Convention, which took force in 1997.

Here’s the convention’s definition:

1. “Chemical Weapons” means the following, together or separately:

(a) Toxic chemicals and their precursors, except where intended for purposes not prohibited under this Convention, as long as the types and quantities are consistent with such purposes;

(b) Munitions and devices, specifically designed to cause death or other harm through the toxic properties of those toxic chemicals specified in subparagraph (a), which would be released as a result of the employment of such munitions and devices;

(c) Any equipment specifically designed for use directly in connection with the employment of munitions and devices specified in subparagraph (b).

The Nazis’ hydrogen cyanide meets the first condition and the gas chambers would qualify as a “device” in the second.

There is no mention that chemical weapons are only those used on the battlefield.

Brian Finlay, president of the Stimson Center, a Washington defense policy group, told us that “the Nazis would surely have been in contravention of the (Chemical Weapons Convention) had it being in effect during the second World War.”

For what it’s worth, the consensus view is that Hitler did not use chemical weapons in battle.

But Spicer’s qualification that Hitler didn’t use them on his “own people,” overlooks that German Jews were full citizens until they had their rights stripped away by Hitler’s totalitarian regime. A large number had assimilated and some had become Protestants. It’s possible Spicer was thinking of Austrians, Hitler’s birthplace, but Austrian Jews fared no better than German ones.

Spicer, in a statement after the press briefing, said: “In no way was I trying to lessen the horrendous nature of the Holocaust. I was trying to draw a distinction of the tactic of using airplanes to drop chemical weapons on population centers.  Any attack on innocent people is reprehensible and inexcusable.”

Our ruling

Spicer said Hitler never used chemical weapons. The Nazi regime brought an industrial approach to mass murder of its citizens and others it sought to exterminate. The construction of gas chambers and the use of deadly gas was fundamental to that strategy.

While the convention against chemical weapons did not exist in World War II, the modern definition would encompass the Nazi gas chambers. It makes no difference whether victims are brought to a room filled with deadly gas, or if the gas is sent to them in a bombing raid.

For his statement and ‘reality’, politifact.com gave Sean Spicer’s claim the Pants on Fire badge!

  1. It states in the article that:

    ” … there is a reason Nazis and Hitler became synonymous with the term gas chamber. That’s because they pumped hydrogen cyanide gas into the killing rooms packed with Jews, Roma, and others singled out for extermination by Nazi leaders. At concentration camps such as Auschwitz, Mauthausen and Sachsenhausen, Jews were taken from cattle cars and forced into ‘showers,’ where guards released the gas. At the height of deportations, an estimated 6,000 Jews died each day in the Auschwitz gas chambers.”

    At the risk of being labeled a neo-Nazi and an anti-Semite one has to ask the obvious question and that is to wonder: where is the proof that millions of people had been killed in homicidal gas chambers in Germany and Poland during World War II? A very easy way to answer that would be to point to the numerous autopsies which show that people had been killed by a poison gas in one of those contraptions. But that cannot be done for the simple reason that no autopsy has ever revealed that gas was the reason why people had died in a gas chamber. Dr. Charles Lawson, who was an American forensic pathologist, performed dozens of autopsies on prisoners who had died in those camps after the war and discovered that not one of them had died from poison gas.

    It should also be pointed out that gas chambers which could kill people never existed in pre-war Europe [though they did exist in U.S. prisons during that time period] suddenly, for some unknown reason, [allegedly] appeared in that war. This is not say that the Germans did not have gas chambers. They certainly did which were used to disinfect the prisoners from typhus which was a major and deadly problem during that war. But there is certainly no evidence, despite the popular belief, that they were somehow used to kill people and especially in such large numbers, as so many people believe.

    In the 1960s Life magazine showed horrific pictures of stacked bodies of prisoners who had died when the Allies liberated the labor camps. It was not until decades later that one discovers that those people died, not in homicidal gas chambers, but because of typhus and that happened because the Allies has bombed the supply lines which ran from German towns to the camps which then meant that vital supplies such as food and medicines could not reach those prisoners.

    It should be noted that while every historical event is allowed to be questioned in countries which claim to be democratic the one event which is not afforded that same luxury is what has become known over the decades as the Holocaust as emotion and hysteria take precedent over reason, logic, and intelligent discourse. In many countries in Europe it is actually a crime to simply question the Holocaust [writer and scientist Germar Rudolf was sentenced to 44 months in prison in Mannheim, Germany about ten years ago because he had committed the egregious crime of writing a book which challenged the basic tenets of the Holocaust] while in this country, as well as the U.K., the retail Internet giant Amazon, recently, without any valid explanation, like something out of Nazi Germany and Ray Bradbury’s chilling dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451, excised 70 revisionist Holocaust books from their web site while allowing books which deal with Satanism and child molestation to remain.

    One should immediately be suspicious of an ideology which goes to such great lengths in not allowing anyone to question their beliefs. When people are programmed to think only one way then one should realize that that type of thinking can lead rather quickly to fascism which seems to be occurring in the United States under the authoritarian presidency of Donald Trump.
