Over 4 million people are threatened by desertification in the Northern part of Nigeria. The Minister of Environment, Mrs Hadiza Ibrahim Mailafia made the disclosure when she received a delegation from the European Union Technical Assistance Mission to Nigeria.
Northern Nigeria is endowed with a large expanse of arable land which has over the years proved a vital resource for agriculture and other economic activities. But with the advancement of the Sahara desert at a rate of 6% every year, over 4 million people are threatened.
Research shows that Nigeria loses about 350,000 hectares of land each year to desretiffication it is in light of this that the European Union Technical Assistance Mission to Nigeria paid a courtesy visit to the Honorouble Minister of Environment Mrs Hadiza Ibrahim Mailafia in her office.
The DG of NEMA says the European Union Team is in the country on the invitation of NEMA and the National Planning Office to asses the impact of flood and provide succor to those affected by the 2012 flooding.
