Kebbi Govt. to Seek FG’s Intervention in Pest Control Efforts
Kebbi Gov Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi says he will seek the Federal Government’s intervention in efforts to fumigate farms in the state against pests such as rodents and maggots.
The governor said this on Tuesday when he conducted an on-the-spot assessment of some dry-season farms in Matankari, Suru Local Government Area.
“I am assuring you that the state government will collaborate with Federal Government to forestall further destruction of crops by pests, especially in rice farms,’’ he said.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that rats and maggots recently invaded farmlands in Matankari village in Suru Local Government Area and destroyed several farms in the neighbourhood.
The district of head of Matankari, Alhaji Ja’a faru Haliru, had earlier complained to the state and local governments about the destruction of crops by rodents and maggots.
He lamented that the pests had caused the crops to dry and wither.
“Many farmlands have been completely destroyed as a result of the pests’ invasion,’’ he said.
Haliru called on the state government to hasten the fumigation of the farmlands to so as enable farmers to have bountiful harvests at the end of the farming season. (NAN)
