Acting President Commends Women on International Women’s Day
Acting president Yemi Osinbajo has appreciated the work done, and role played by women in Nigeria over the years, since the struggle for independence.
In a statement by his spokesman Laolu Akande, professor Osinbajo said the nation values the contribution women are making to national development.
The statement added that to strengthen the economic capacity of Nigerian women, President Muhammadu Buhari personally ensured that the sum of N1.6 billion was set aside for the national women’s empowerment fund – the Jarin Mata Fund.
The administration, he said also established as part of its social investment programme, the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) which provides interest-free soft loans to artisans and traders.
At the moment, 60% of beneficiaries under the GEEP programme are women.
The acting president said while some progress has been made connecting women and girls with opportunities, there is still so much more to do and we must strive to use our laws, cultural and religious institutions as well as our resources to empower women, give them opportunity, and protect their rights to a safe, healthy and stable life in our country.
He said this administration remains committed to ensuring the protection of all women including from all forms of gender-based violence especially those living in parts of the country where the security situation is difficult and living conditions are challenging.
FEC Approves Award of 470 Million Dollar Contract
The federal executive council has approved the award of a 470 million dollar contract aimed at enhancing the supply of potable water to greater part of the Federal Capital Territory in line with the Abuja master plan.
Minister of FCT Muhammad Musa Bello, announced this while briefing newsmen after the council meeting presided over by the acting president, Yemi Osinbajo.
Electoral Reform Committee Meet in Kaduna
The Senator Ken Nnamani led constitution and electoral reform committee, has continued to receive inputs as the committee holds public hearing in Kaduna for the north west geo- political zone.
Stakeholders including the governors of Kaduna and Katsina states were among participants at the hearing.
Information Minister Lai Mohammed Visits NLNG Bonny
Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed was a guest at the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Company, Bonny Island in Rivers State.
It was reported that the visit afforded the minister the opportunity to appreciate the role the company is playing in contributing to the nation’s economic growth.
FRSC Emergency Response on Kaduna Road
Following the commencement of international flights at the Kaduna airport, the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi says the establishment of eight additional command outposts along the Abuja/Kaduna highway is for emergency response.
This was during an assessment visit to the various outposts along the highway.
Major General Adeyinka Adebayo Dies At 89
Major General Adeyinka Adebayo, former military governor of old Western Region of Nigeria has died, aged 89.
Adebayo who is the biological father of Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, the first executive governor of Ekiti State, died in his sleep according to a family source.
General Robert Adeyinka Adebayo born 9th march 1928, was the former governor of the now defunct Western State of Nigeria between 1966 and 1971.
He became governor after col. Francis Adekunle Fajuyi’s death in the 1966 coup d’état.
SGF Inspects Skills Acquisition Centre
The secretary to the government of the federation, Babachir David Lawal has called for private sector support to government’s efforts at building capacity of youths through skills acquisition programmes.
This was in his message at an inspection tour of skills training center at the Industrial Training Fund, Abuja.
FCT Minister Laments Epileptic Power Supply in the Capital
During a courtesy call on the FCT minister by the management of the transmission company of Nigeria (TCN), Muhammad Musa Bello lamented regarding the epileptic distribution of power to the territory, saying it is barely enough to power critical infrastructure in the nation’s capital.
