The European Commission has announced €20 million in new humanitarian aid for Mozambique to help the country respond to severe flooding and the ongoing conflict in Cabo Delgado where years of insurgent violence have displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

In a statement, EU’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations said Mozambique would receive the largest chunk of a €36 million regional package for southern Africa and the Indian Ocean region.

The European Commission announced today €36 million in EU humanitarian aid that will reach six countries across Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean region,” the statement said.

The remaining €16 million would go towards addressing humanitarian needs, with a focus on malnutrition and health emergencies in Angola, Madagascar, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The commission said millions across the region face acute food insecurity, while northern Mozambique continues to experience one of the world’s most protracted displacement crises due to attacks by Islamist militants linked to the Islamic State group.

Mozambique has endured repeated flooding in recent years, with heavy rains and cyclones destroying homes, crops and infrastructure, particularly in central and southern provinces.

The combined impact of climate‑driven disasters and the Cabo Delgado insurgency has stretched humanitarian capacity and left communities facing chronic shortages of food, clean water, healthcare and schooling.

Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo is on a working visit to Brussels aimed at strengthening cooperation with the EU, including a scheduled meeting with European Council President António Costa.
