Nigeria is taking steps to strengthen her democratic traditions and Institutions as it prepares to take over the leadership of the Community of Democracies, a Global Inter-governmental Organization of Democratic Nations by 2015. Members of the judiciary, traditional rulers, politicians as well as the international community are part of the two day seminar. In February 2013, at the United Nations office in Geneva, Nigeria was elected president of the Community of Democracies with the task of strengthening emerging democracies and democracies in transition all over the world.
To effectively deliver on the task, Nigeria is assessing how it’s internal democracy has thrived in the country since 1999 so as to gather opinion on how to strengthen it. Speakers at the seminar spoke on how to overcome the challenges in Nigeria’s democracy. To have a successful tenure as the President of the Committee of Democracies from 2015 – 2017, the take away from the seminar is building a strong platform that will enable her lead by example.
