Suspected Islamic State-aligned fighters have launched a coordinated and deadly assault on a military base in Mairari village, Borno State, killing 15 soldiers and 5 anti-jihadist militia members before burning the facility to the ground.

The Attack on Mairari Village

According to defense and local sources speaking to AFP, heavily armed insurgents belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) overran the military installation located in the Lake Chad area of northeastern Borno State. The attackers reportedly breached the base’s defenses, overpowering personnel and setting fire to military infrastructure and vehicles before retreating.

The 20 casualties include 15 regular troops of the Nigerian armed forces and 5 members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) who were stationed alongside the military to provide local intelligence and tactical support.

“The terrorists killed 15 soldiers and five civilian JTF members assisting the soldiers during the intense attack,” a Nigerian military source confirmed.

A Protracted Insurgency in the Northeast

This latest tragedy underscores the persistent security challenges facing Nigeria’s northeastern flank. Borno State remains the epicenter of a grueling 17-year Islamist insurgency originally initiated by Boko Haram and subsequently compounded by its splinter faction, ISWAP.

The decade-and-a-half-long conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced roughly two million people across Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, necessitating sustained regional and national counter-insurgency efforts.
