To encourage proper antenatal and postnatal care and help reduce preventable maternal deaths, six service delivery instruments to further strengthen the quality of maternal and newborn care across Nigeria have been introduced at a ministerial briefing on safe motherhood by the ministry of health and social welfare.

Heads of agencies and implementing partners commit to the implementation of the documents to bridge gaps in maternal health.

The documents include National antenatal care guidelines, Mamii comprehensive guide, Revised LSS training package, National clinical service protocol for obstetric and neonatal care Mnh commodities reporting tools and Mnh multi product introduction plan – mpip.

To strengthen nationwide coverage and impact, the ministry of health and social welfare as well as other key agencies on disease prevention and family health insist that the introduction of the documents will support overall health and reduce obstetric risks
With ambulance services available across the nation even at hard-to-reach zones, these experts are of the view that communal engagement, functional primary healthcare centres and subsidized medical services will aid full implementation of the tools to reduce maternal and neonatal deaths.
