Vice President Kashim Shettima has visited victims of the recent bomb blast at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), offering condolences to the government and people of Borno State over the tragic incident.

The attack occurred on March 16, 2026, when a bomb explosion rocked parts of Maiduguri, including the hospital facility.

The Vice President described the attack as a tragedy, stressing that no religion condones the killing of innocent people. He condemned the perpetrators, identified as members of Boko Haram, saying their actions are “inhumane and unacceptable.”

“We are here to commiserate with the government and people of Borno State over this sad incident,” Shettima said.

He said, “We want to assure Nigerians that we will not rest until peace and sanity are fully restored in Borno, the North East, and the country at large.”

He expressed optimism despite the setback, saying, “No matter how long darkness persists, it will eventually give way to light.”

VP Shettima said that “the Nigerian government remains committed to restoring stability and ensuring such incidents are brought to an end.’

The Vice President also highlighted ongoing support for victims and affected families, noting that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with other partners, will begin distributing relief materials to the injured and bereaved families.

He commended the leadership of relevant agencies, including the North East Development Commission (NEDC) and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), for their swift response and presence at the scene.

VP Shettima emphasised the moral responsibility of government and stakeholders to support victims, promising that no effort would be spared in providing assistance and facilitating recovery.

He also thanked the media for their continued support in informing the public and raising awareness during such critical moments.

The Vice President was accompanied by key government officials, including the Director-General of NEMA and the Deputy Governor of Borno State, as part of coordinated efforts to respond to the aftermath of the attack.
