Senate Passes Bill on Physically Challenged

By Adamu Sambo

Concerted efforts are being made by the Senate in addressing marginalisation and all forms of discrimination against the physically-challenged persons in the country. This is with a view to giving them the desired sense of belonging and full integration into the main society. Already, a Bill for an Act to ensure full integration of persons with disabilities and to establish a commission to cater for their health, education and protection of their rights has passed Second Reading.

Senator Nurudeen Abatemi-Usman, who sponsored the Bill, said it seeks to outlaw discrimination in employment, housing and transportation on the grounds of disabilities. While debating on the General Principles of the Bill, Senators acknowledged the conditions of persons with disabilities and the inability of government to provide for them adequately in terms of policies and programmes. They say now is the time to act as no one is immune to disability. After passing te second reading, the Bill was referred to the relevant committee for further legislative action.
