Nigerian football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha holds the World Cup record for the most successful dribbles in a single match, having completed an astonishing 15 dribbles. According to FIFA, Okocha completed 15 successful dribbles during Nigeria’s Round of 16 clash against the Italy National Football Team at the 1994 FIFA World Cup—a feat that has remained unmatched for more than three decades.

Former Brazilian forward Jairzinho and former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne are joint second on the list, each recording 13 successful dribbles in a single World Cup match. Jairzinho accomplished this feat during Brazil’s clash with Uruguay in the 1970 tournament, while Gascoigne matched it in England’s dramatic encounter with Cameroon at the 1990 World Cup. Nine players have each recorded 12 successful dribbles in a single World Cup match, rounding out the prestigious all-time list of dribbling maestros. Among these football greats are Portugal’s Eusebio, who dazzled against Hungary in 1966; West Germany’s Reinhard Libuda, who impressed against Bulgaria in 1970; and the Netherlands’ legendary Johan Cruyff, who showcased his skills against Sweden in 1974. Italy’s Sandro Mazzola matched the feat against Poland in the same 1974 tournament, while Argentina’s Diego Maradona delivered his iconic performance against England in 1986. More recently, Germany’s Jamal Musiala joined this list with his standout display against Costa Rica in 2022.

FIFA also highlighted other remarkable dribbling achievements in World Cup history. Lionel Messi holds the record for the most successful dribbles across all World Cup appearances, amassing an incredible 125 over his storied career on football’s biggest stage. Meanwhile, Diego Maradona remains the player with the highest number of successful dribbles in a single tournament, having completed 53 during his unforgettable run at the 1986 World Cup.

Okocha’s record-setting performance remains one of the most memorable displays of individual brilliance in World Cup history. His achievement stands as a testament to his technical prowess and his enduring legacy as one of Africa’s greatest football talents.
