The country music legend and global superstar leaves behind a six-decade career defined by timeless music, acting, philanthropy and an enduring connection with generations of fans.
Country music legend Dolly Parton, widely regarded as one of the greatest singer-songwriters in the genre, has died at the age of 80. Her death was announced by her nephew, Brian Seaver, in a post on Instagram.
The singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist, whose career spanned more than six decades, leaves behind one of the most recognisable legacies in popular music. Among her most enduring achievements was writing two of the 20th century’s most iconic songs, “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” which was later made famous by Whitney Houston.
Alongside her music and acting, Parton was an astute businesswoman and philanthropist. She founded the film and TV production company Sandollar, with former manager Sandy Gallin, which went on to produce hits such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Father of the Bride film series.
Parton’s death comes after she had recently spoken publicly about her health and recovery, while continuing to discuss plans for her music and other projects.
Parton was scheduled to appear in person on August 14, 2026 for the opening of the NightFlight Expedition roller coaster at her Dollywood theme park but was unable to attend after doctors advised her to rest due to dizziness and dehydration. She instead appeared through a prerecorded video. In her final health updates before her passing, Parton also revealed that she had neglected her own medical needs while caring for her late husband, Carl Dean.
Her passing comes 17 months after the death of her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean. Tributes are expected to pour in from across the entertainment industry and around the world as fans, fellow musicians and admirers remember a performer whose influence extended far beyond country music.
According to her team, Parton’s family will hold a small, private funeral service. They have also asked that, instead of sending flowers, well-wishers consider donating to her beloved children’s literacy charity, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
