The 83rd Venice International Film Festival has officially opened in Italy, bringing some of the biggest names in global cinema to the Venice Lido for 11 days of premieres, competition and celebration. Among the major highlights of this year’s edition is Hollywood star George Clooney, who is set to receive the prestigious Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in recognition of his outstanding contribution to cinema.
For Clooney, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement adds another major distinction to a career spanning more than four decades. The 65-year-old actor, director, producer and screenwriter rose to international fame through his work in television before becoming one of Hollywood’s most recognisable leading men.
He has starred in acclaimed films including Ocean’s Eleven, Syriana, Up in the Air and Michael Clayton, while also earning recognition behind the camera for films such as Good Night, and Good Luck and The Ides of March.
The festival’s director, Alberto Barbera, said the films selected for this year’s programme largely reflect the challenges facing the world today. Speaking to The Associated Press, Barbera noted that most of the films considered during the selection process dealt with “contemporary problems.” “We didn’t really have a choice,” he said, describing the festival as “a space open to everybody for discussion, for confrontation” where filmmakers are “completely free to express themselves.”
He added that he was pleased such films could help audiences and critics gain “a better understanding of what is going on in our contemporary, difficult world.”
