The 25-year-old eldest son of the former Hollywood couple was granted a legal name change by a Los Angeles judge on September 14, 2026, changing his name from Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt to Maddox Chivan Jolie. Court reports say Maddox had cited personal reasons for the request.
The decision comes as the six Jolie-Pitt children increasingly enter adulthood and establish identities of their own. Maddox had already been using Jolie professionally, including in the credits of his mother’s film Couture, before the court formally approved the change. His decision now makes that choice part of his legal identity as well.
Maddox is not the first of the children to move away from the Pitt surname. His sister Shiloh legally changed her name in 2024, shortly after turning 18, becoming Shiloh Jolie. Zahara has also taken legal steps to change her name, while Vivienne has filed a petition seeking to remove Pitt from her surname.
Taken together, those developments have drawn attention to how the children are choosing to identify themselves as they move further into adulthood. However, the decisions should not automatically be interpreted as a collective rejection of their father. The individual reasons behind each name change are personal, and Maddox’s court filing itself cited personal reasons rather than publicly linking the decision to his parents’ relationship.
What It Could Mean for Brad Pitt
For Brad Pitt, Maddox’s decision may carry significance beyond its legal effect. A surname is one of the most visible connections between a parent and child, particularly in a family that has spent years under intense public scrutiny.
Removing “Pitt” does not erase Maddox’s biological or family history, but it does change the way he has chosen to be identified.
