Madonna dominated the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards with seven wins, while Taylor Swift made VMA history with three awards and BTS claimed three major prizes, including Song of the Year for “SWIM,” as music’s biggest stars gathered in Los Angeles.
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards belonged to a trio of global music powerhouses as Madonna, Taylor Swift and BTS emerged among the ceremony’s biggest winners on Sunday, September 27. Madonna led the night with seven trophies, Swift took home Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia” and two additional honours, while BTS won Song of the Year, Best K-Pop and Best Group at the ceremony held at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater.
Madonna entered the ceremony as the most-nominated artist and ultimately finished with seven awards, including Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration alongside Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring Your Love” and Best Dance for Confessions II – The Film. Her haul also included Best Cinematography, Best Choreography, Best Long Form Video and Best Album.
The wins came on a night that also marked Madonna’s return to the VMA stage after 23 years. The 68-year-old opened the ceremony with Carpenter before joining Charli XCX for a performance celebrating her musical legacy and the era of New York’s club culture that helped shape her career.
Swift, meanwhile, added three awards to her record, including the night’s top prize, Video of the Year, for “The Fate of Ophelia.” She also won Best Direction for “Opalite” and received the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, recognising her work behind the camera across her music-video career.
Her three victories took her career VMA total to 33, making her the most-awarded artist in the history of the ceremony. Swift also used her acceptance speech to pay tribute to the late Dolly Parton, whom she described as an inspiration whose music and career reflected love, gratitude and connection with fans.
BTS also enjoyed a major night, winning Song of the Year and Best K-Pop for “SWIM,” while taking home Best Group. Their three awards reinforced the group’s continued presence among the leading global acts recognised at the VMAs.
The group’s victories also reflected the increasingly international character of the VMAs, with K-pop represented alongside major winners from pop, hip-hop, R&B, Latin and country music. LISA won Best Pop, while Cardi B and Kehlani, Bruno Mars, Bad Bunny and Ella Langley also took home genre awards.
Beyond the individual wins, the 2026 ceremony brought together different generations and corners of the music industry. Madonna’s seven-award haul placed one of pop’s longest-standing stars at the centre of the night, while Swift continued to expand her record at the VMAs and BTS represented the growing global reach of K-pop.
