For some people, daily life comes with added layers of challenge shaped by circumstance, society, and perception. Yet despite these difficulties, many continue to rise every day with courage and determination. This is the story of 64-year-old Comfort Orji, a woman living with albinism who is popularly known in Makurdi as “Oibo.” For the past 38 years, Comfort Orji has spent her days doing what many people would ordinarily avoid — hawking sachet water from street to street under the harsh sun.

Despite her age and the health risks associated with albinism, she continues to push her cart daily through the streets of Makurdi in order to fend for herself, survive, and pay her bills. Her story is one of resilience, dignity, hard work, and survival against overwhelming odds. It also highlights the realities faced by many persons living with albinism, including social stigma, economic hardship, and health challenges linked to prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Through years of struggle, Comfort Orji has remained determined to keep going, inspiring many with her strength and perseverance. What keeps her motivated after nearly four decades of street hawking? How can society better support vulnerable persons and senior citizens? What challenges do people living with albinism continue to face in Nigeria today?
