Ghana and Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz have mutually agreed to terminate their working relationship following a disappointing start to the country’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The decision followed discussions between Queiroz and the Ghana Football Association (GFA), with both parties agreeing that ending the Portuguese coach’s tenure was the most appropriate course of action under the circumstances.
In a statement, Queiroz said the decision was not easy but was taken with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football in mind.
“It has been an honour to serve Ghana and the Black Stars,” Queiroz said, thanking the GFA, its president, his technical staff and everyone who supported the team.
Queiroz returned to lead Ghana after previously taking charge of the Black Stars during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. His latest spell began with the team preparing for the 2026 World Cup.
However, Ghana’s recent results have put the team under pressure in the early stages of the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign, contributing to the decision to end his tenure.
Reflecting on his time with the national team, Queiroz said he had arrived determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and support the development of Ghanaian talent, but acknowledged that the necessary conditions had not been fully established.
The Portuguese coach also urged Ghanaians to continue supporting the players, describing the current squad as a generation with talent and potential to achieve great things if provided with unity, support and the right environment.
“Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them,” Queiroz said, before adding that he would leave Ghana “with respect, gratitude, and pride.”
He concluded his message by reaffirming his affection for the country, saying: “Ghana comes first. The Black Stars come first. Ghanaian football comes first.”
