Nigeria’s athletics team is set to take centre stage at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, carrying the nation’s hopes for podium finishes in one of the most competitive events of the Games.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has assembled a strong squad comprising experienced champions and exciting young talents who will compete across 18 track and field events, including the men’s 4x100m relay, women’s 4x100m relay and the mixed 4x400m relay.
Leading the team is world record holder and multiple Commonwealth champion Tobi Amusan, who returns in search of another memorable performance in the women’s 100m hurdles. Joining her are long jump star Ese Brume, sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi, Favour Ashe, Samuel Ogazi, Udodi Onwuzuruike and several other athletes who have impressed on both national and international stages this season.
The squad blends experience with youthful energy, reflecting Nigeria’s growing depth in athletics. Several members earned their places through the AFN’s national trials before proceeding to the National Sports Commission’s preparation camp ahead of the Games.
Nigeria’s relay teams are also expected to challenge for medals after months of preparation, while the country’s field athletes will look to continue Nigeria’s proud tradition of success at the Commonwealth Games.
Athletics remains one of the highlights of the Glasgow 2026 programme, with competition taking place from July 27 to August 1 at Scotstoun Stadium. This edition introduces the mixed 4x400m relay and brings back the historic Commonwealth Mile, alongside the largest para-athletics programme in the history of the Games.
With a blend of proven champions and rising stars, Team Nigeria enters Glasgow determined to uphold the country’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading athletics nations.
