Brazilian football icon Ronaldinho has sent shockwaves through the football world after arriving in Italy to officially link up with Serie C side Ravenna. The former Ballon d’Or winner, now 46, was welcomed by thousands of enthusiastic fans, although it remains unclear whether he will come out of retirement to feature for the Italian third-tier club or take on an off-field role.

Thousands of supporters turned out to catch a glimpse of the 2002 World Cup winner, who famously dazzled in Serie A during his spell with AC Milan.

Speaking to the media and supporters during the beachside ceremony, Ronaldinho expressed his excitement about being part of the ambitious project led by his friend and Ravenna president Ignazio Cipriani.

“I’m very happy to be here with my friends, but let’s wait and see if things go well with the team,” Ronaldinho said.

While his visit to Italy is primarily aimed at supporting Cipriani’s vision for the club, the veteran Brazilian made it clear that his passion for football remains as strong as ever, leaving open the possibility of a more active involvement with Ravenna.

Cipriani confirmed that Ronaldinho will not feature when Ravenna face Reggiana in their Serie C season opener on Monday, further suggesting that the Brazilian’s involvement with the club will initially remain off the pitch.

Ravenna finished third in Group B of Italy’s third tier last season and will be aiming to secure promotion back to Serie B, a division they have not played in since 2008.
