A wildfire on Indonesia’s Sumatra island has destroyed nearly 300 homes and forced hundreds of residents to evacuate, as dry conditions fuel fires in the country.

Residents of a village in Bangka Belitung province have been left homeless after flames swept through their community, destroying wooden houses and forcing families to flee.

The village’s homes, many built on stilts above water, were particularly vulnerable as the area dried up, allowing the fire to spread rapidly between the wooden structures.

“Everything is gone,” a local farmer told Agence France-Presse (AFP), describing the devastation caused by the blaze.

The fire has displaced hundreds of people, leaving affected residents facing uncertainty over shelter and the recovery of their belongings.

The incident comes as Indonesia battles wildfires and haze, with dry conditions increasing the risk of fires spreading through vulnerable communities and vegetation.

The destruction highlights the risks faced by residents in areas where homes are built largely from combustible materials and changing environmental conditions can intensify the impact of wildfires.

Authorities and affected communities face the immediate challenge of supporting displaced families and assessing the damage as efforts continue to address the wider fire situation.
