The Bishoftu International Airport represents a landmark development in Africa’s aviation history. With its massive capacity, modern design, and strategic vision, it is poised to redefine air travel on the continent.
Upon completion, the airport will not only be the largest in Africa but also a key global aviation hub, strengthening Ethiopia’s role in international air transport and contributing significantly to Africa’s economic integration and growth.
Africa’s most ambitious aviation infrastructure project is the Bishoftu International Airport, currently under development in Ethiopia. Located about 40 kilometres southeast of Addis Ababa, near the town of Bishoftu, the airport is designed to become the largest and busiest aviation hub on the African continent.
The project is spearheaded by Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s leading airline, as part of a long-term strategy to expand capacity and reinforce its dominance in global and regional air travel.
The development of the Bishoftu International Airport is driven by the limitations of the existing Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, which has undergone multiple expansions but is now approaching its operational limits.
Passenger traffic through Addis Ababa has grown rapidly over the past decade due to:
- Increased international connectivity
- Expansion of Ethiopian Airlines’ global network
- Rising demand for air travel within Africa
The new airport is therefore conceived as a long-term solution to accommodate future growth and position Ethiopia as a central aviation hub linking Africa with Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
