A life jacket worn by survivor of the Titanic disaster was up for auction more than century after the ship sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in 1912.

The jacket was worn by one of the first class passengers on board a lifeboat and was expected to sell for 350,000 pounds ($473,000).

“They were on lifeboat number one. Lifeboat number one was a little controversial. It was known as the Money Boat,” auctioneer Andrew Aldridge told British broadcaster Sky News.

“It would have been a terrible trauma, you know, as that lifeboat is being rowed away from the sinking Titanic. The screams, the horror, the cold, it would have been a truly horrific experience,” he explained.

Other salvaged items were also on display and up for auction.

The British luxury liner capsized on its maiden voyage on April 15, 1912, off Newfoundland, just over two and a half hours after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage.

More than 1,500 people died, while 710 survived.
