British filmmaker Mike Leigh has said his latest film, Tender Loving Care, could be his last, citing a medical condition that may make it difficult for him to continue working.

Leigh made the disclosure while speaking to Agence France-Presse (AFP) on the red carpet at the London Film Festival, where the drama, starring Marion Bailey and Kate O’Flynn, was being presented.

The veteran director said his desire to continue making films remained strong, but acknowledged that his health could limit his ability to work.

“It’s only because I have a medical condition that makes it difficult to do stuff, but otherwise I’d love to make a hundred more films, but it may not be possible, just from a practical point of view,” Leigh said.

Known for his socially conscious filmmaking, Leigh said his work has consistently focused on people and their experiences.

“My films are about humanity,” he said, describing the central philosophy behind his approach to storytelling.

Tender Loving Care explores family relationships and the challenges surrounding the United Kingdom’s social care system, bringing personal struggles into focus against a wider social backdrop.

The film stars Marion Bailey and Kate O’Flynn, continuing Leigh’s longstanding interest in everyday lives, complex relationships and the pressures that shape human behaviour.

Leigh, one of Britain’s most recognised filmmakers, has built a career around character-driven dramas that examine class, family and social inequality, often drawing on detailed collaboration with his actors to develop authentic performances.

Although the director has suggested that his latest work may mark the end of his filmmaking career, his comments reflect a practical concern rather than a loss of creative ambition.

For now, Tender Loving Care brings Leigh’s exploration of human relationships and social realities to the London Film Festival, while leaving open the possibility that the filmmaker could return if his health allows.
