Lagos/Enugu — Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the dismantling of a sophisticated, clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Enugu State, apprehending two Nigerian men in connection with a syndicate allegedly operating alongside a Mexican drug cartel.
The Enugu Operation: What Unfolded
Operating under intelligence-led surveillance, NDLEA operatives struck a facility located in the Eziama community of Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State. The operation yielded massive quantities of hazardous precursor chemicals used for synthetic drug manufacturing, including:
- 690 litres of methylamine
- 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol
- 300 litres of hydrochloric acid
- 290 litres each of toluene and acetone
- 400 litres of liquid sodium hydroxide
The agency identified the arrested suspects as Chukwu Obumneme Christopher (45, alias “Brown”) and Chukwu Georginus Monday (60, alias “George”). Investigators maintain that the pair worked in tandem with Rodriguez Villanueva, an operative of a Mexico City-based cartel who currently remains at large. Both defendants have since been arraigned before the Federal High Court in Enugu on a five-count charge encompassing conspiracy, organizing and financing drug trafficking, and unlawful possession of precursor chemicals.

- July 2026 (Ogun/Oyo): Following industrial-scale raids across Lagos and Ogun states, the agency arraigned 10 suspects—including three Mexican nationals—over the production of an estimated 2.67 tons of methamphetamine.
- August–September 2026 (Ebonyi): Operatives intercepted Mexican national Arturo Carrera Loaiza at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos as he attempted to flee the country, linking him directly to a clandestine laboratory in Ebonyi State.
Security analysts note that transnational syndicates, specifically, groups like the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) are increasingly outsourcing production risks to local actors in West Africa while maintaining a firm grip on technological expertise and global distribution channels.
