A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the remand of Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), in Kuje Prison, Abuja.

Justice Mohammed Garba Umar, in a short ruling, ordered Sowore to be kept in prison pending the hearing and determination of his motion for a stay of the order revoking his bail and the bench warrant issued for his arrest. The judge also dismissed Sowore’s earlier application seeking his recusal from the case on grounds of alleged bias.

The matter has been adjourned to June 24, 2026, for the hearing of the stay application, filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN. Justice Umar had, on June 16, revoked Sowore’s bail and issued the bench warrant after he failed to appear in court for his trial.

Sowore, also publisher of Sahara Reporters, is being prosecuted by the DSS over a five-count charge bordering on criminal defamation and cybercrime, after he referred to President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal” in posts on X and Facebook. Reacting to his remand, Sowore said he remains undeterred, describing the case against him as “bogus” and declaring: “Imprisonment has never defeated a just cause, and it never will.”
