Nigeria is strengthening measures to ensure patients receive safe, quality and coordinated healthcare, with particular attention to people living with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs).

Speaking at the commemoration of World Patient Safety Day 2026 in Abuja, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, highlighted the need to protect patients throughout their healthcare journey.

The 2026 global theme is “Safe Care for Noncommunicable Diseases”, with the slogan “Safe care for life!” (health.gov.ng) Pate said the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare developed the National Patient Safety and Care Quality Policy and Implementation Strategy in 2024 and established the National Task Force on Clinical Governance and Patient Safety in 2026.

The task force is developing a national framework to strengthen governance, accountability, quality improvement, monitoring and patient safety practices across health institutions. (health.gov.ng)
