President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman, pro-democracy activist, and Afenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 100th birthday anniversary.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, describes the elder statesman as a symbol of integrity, honesty, discipline, and selfless service to the nation.
He notes that Pa Fasoranti has lived an exemplary life devoted to national development, with remarkable contributions to education, politics, and Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
The statement highlights Baba Fasoranti’s academic achievements at the University of Ibadan, the University of Hull, and Maguire University in Sydney, Australia.
The statement also commends his contributions to the education sector through years of teaching and the establishment of schools in Ondo State, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School, and St. Frances’ Academy, founded in memory of his late wife. Describing him as one of the last surviving disciples of Obafemi Awolowo,
The President recalled his active involvement in the defunct Action Group and the Unity Party of Nigeria, noting that Pa Fasoranti’s service as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983 under the administration of late Adekunle Ajasin, noting that his integrity and financial prudence distinguished him in office.
The President acknowledged Baba Fasoranti’s role in the struggle against military dictatorship and his continued advocacy for Yoruba unity and development through Afenifere.
The statement reflects on the challenges the elder statesman endured, including an assassination attempt during the military era and the tragic loss of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, in 2019.
He appreciates Pa Fasoranti’s prayers and support throughout his political journey, particularly during the presidential campaign, and prays for more years of good health and strength for the elder statesman.
