Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has unveiled proposed measures to address Nigeria’s economic challenges and insecurity, including restoring petroleum subsidy, reopening land borders and reducing pilgrimage fares, if elected president in 2027.
Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the promises on Wednesday, November 4, during the party’s presidential campaign flag-off in Sokoto State.
He said his proposed administration would introduce policies aimed at easing economic hardship, improving security and creating opportunities for businesses and households.
On the economy, the former vice-president pledged to reconsider and restore petroleum subsidy, arguing that the measure would help cushion the impact of rising fuel prices, reduce transportation costs and ease the burden of increasing commodity prices on Nigerians.
He also promised to reopen Nigeria’s land borders to encourage trade with neighbouring African countries, saying the move would create economic opportunities for farmers, traders, transporters and other business operators.
On security, Atiku promised to confront insecurity across the country, including kidnapping, banditry and terrorism, which continue to affect several communities.
He further pledged to reduce the cost of religious pilgrimages for both Muslim and Christian faithful, saying his administration would introduce measures to make the journeys more affordable.
The ADC presidential candidate called on Nigerians to support the party in the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence that it would provide an alternative approach to addressing the country’s economic and security challenges.
ADC Campaign Begins in Sokoto
The campaign flag-off marked the formal commencement of Atiku’s presidential campaign activities in Sokoto ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The event attracted several ADC leaders and political stakeholders, including former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, ADC National Chairman David Mark and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who is Atiku’s running mate.
Speaking at the event, David Mark expressed confidence in the party’s prospects in Sokoto, urging members and supporters to sustain their mobilisation efforts ahead of the elections.
Tambuwal also called on Nigerians to support the ADC, saying the country needs improved security, economic stability and better living conditions for all.
The party’s governorship candidate in Sokoto, Manir Dan’iya, assured Atiku of the party’s commitment to strengthening its grassroots structures and mobilising support across the state’s 23 local government areas.
