Declining Interest in Education Courses Worries Academic Union Members of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union say addressing the growing decline in candidates’ applications for teacher education and agricultural science courses will require stronger incentives beyond the newly introduced JAMB waiver policy.

The union expressed concern over the decreasing interest among students in pursuing careers in teaching and agricultural studies, warning that the trend could negatively affect the future of Nigeria’s education and agricultural sectors. According to COEASU members, while the JAMB waiver policy is a positive step, more comprehensive measures are needed to attract young Nigerians into critical professional fields such as teacher education and agriculture.

Stakeholders are calling for additional incentives including scholarships, improved welfare packages, employment opportunities, better remuneration, and enhanced learning facilities to make the programmes more attractive to prospective students. Education experts also warn that the declining enrollment could worsen the shortage of qualified teachers and agricultural professionals needed to support national development.

The development has renewed discussions around education reforms, manpower development, and strategies for strengthening Nigeria’s human capital base.
