Captain Smit Machchhar, the 32-year-old Indian pilot who fought off a life-threatening cockpit attack by his co-pilot mid-flight, has spoken publicly for the first time, declaring that his absolute determination to save the lives of 174 passengers and crew drove him to overcome his injuries and prevent a catastrophic disaster.
A Desperate Struggle in the Sky
The harrowing incident occurred aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, carrying 174 passengers and crew. Roughly two and a half hours into the journey, the co-pilot launched a sudden assault on Captain Machchhar inside the cockpit, reportedly stabbing him and attempting to sabotage aircraft systems to send the Boeing 737 into a deadly plunge.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door from the inside. Passengers and crew rushed forward to subdue the attacker, enabling two off-duty Flydubai pilots travelling as passengers to safely land the aircraft at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

“I was trying to save my own life, but I knew I could not let all those people die.” — Captain Smit Machchhar
International Response and Ongoing Investigations
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Captain Machchhar as a true hero who prevented a major disaster, noting that the flight had been carrying citizens of various nationalities. Israeli officials have launched an investigation into whether the incident constituted an attempted terror attack, indicating initial assessments suggest the co-pilot—identified as an Omani national—may have undergone radical Islamist indoctrination and acted alone.
Meanwhile, Saudi authorities detained and questioned the co-pilot before transferring him back to the United Arab Emirates. Flydubai confirmed an altercation occurred in the flight deck, warning against premature speculation while formal investigations continue across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Israel.
