King Harald V, one of Europe’s longest-serving monarchs, has died in Oslo after more than three decades on the throne, bringing an end to a reign defined by national unity, modernisation and a close bond with the Norwegian people.

The Royal Palace announced that Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday, August 28, 2026. Following his death, the royal flag was lowered as mourners gathered outside the Royal Palace in Oslo to pay their respects to a monarch who had become a familiar and respected figure in Norwegian public life.
Harald became king in January 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. Over more than three decades on the throne, he helped guide Norway’s monarchy into the modern era while maintaining a close relationship with the Norwegian people.
He was particularly known for his emphasis on tolerance, inclusion and national unity. During moments of national difficulty, Harald often used his position to call for solidarity and remind Norwegians of the values that bound them together.
Harald’s final years were overshadowed by recurring health problems and several hospitalisations. His condition reportedly deteriorated after he was admitted to hospital earlier this month, with his final illness linked to a bacterial infection in his bloodstream.
Harald is survived by his wife, Queen Sonja, whom he married in 1968 following a nine-year courtship. Their relationship was considered unconventional at the time because Sonja was a commoner. Their eventual marriage marked an important moment for the Norwegian royal family, and over the years they became one of the country’s best-known royal couples. Together, they had two children, Princess Märtha Louise and Crown Prince Haakon.
Following Harald’s death, his 53-year-old son, Crown Prince Haakon, immediately succeeded him as Norway’s monarch.
King Haakon VII now begins a new chapter for the Norwegian royal family after more than three decades under Harald’s reign. His succession also places the next generation of the royal family in focus, with Princess Ingrid Alexandra becoming heir apparent.
Harald’s death therefore marks both the end of a long royal era and the beginning of a new one. For 35 years, he was a constant presence through changing times in Norway, balancing tradition with a modern understanding of the monarchy.
