Uganda is mourning the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the Omukama of the Tooro Kingdom, who died on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the age of 34 while receiving medical treatment in the United States. He had reportedly been critically ill in the days leading up to his death.
His death was announced by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who described the loss as an immeasurable tragedy for the royal family, the people of Tooro and Uganda.
Born on April 16, 1992, he was the son of the late Tooro King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III and Queen Best Kemigisa. When his father died in August 1995, three-year-old Oyo inherited the throne on September 12 of the same year, making him the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
His accession attracted international attention, turning the young prince into a global curiosity. The Tooro Kingdom says his status was subsequently recognised in the Guinness World Records.
Because Oyo was still a child, royal regents helped oversee the kingdom as he grew up. As he matured, however, he gradually assumed greater responsibilities and developed into the adult figurehead of the Tooro Kingdom.
The Tooro Kingdom has assured the public that the royal succession will continue, announcing that Oyo left behind a prince who is his heir. However, officials have said the identity of the heir will be formally revealed at the appropriate time in accordance with Tooro traditions and customs.
Tooro’s Chief Prince Charles Kamurasi has also summoned members of the royal family for an emergency meeting at Karuziika Palace as preparations for the succession begin.
King Oyo leaves behind one of the most remarkable royal stories in modern Africa: a three-year-old boy who inherited a centuries-old throne, grew up under worldwide attention and eventually became an adult king who spent almost his entire life serving as Tooro’s cultural figurehead.
