The Federal Government has promised to deliver an immediate 10 megawatts of gas-powered electricity to the Idu Industrial area by December this year, guaranteeing round-the-clock power supply to businesses operating in the estate. An additional 40 megawatts is expected to be added within the next one year.
The commitment was made by the Ministers of State for Industry, and Power, senator John Owan Enoh and Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe at the groundbreaking ceremony for phase one of a 50-megawatt power project sited in Lungi, in the Zuba area of Abuja.
According to the ministers, the project forms part of a broader push to stabilise electricity supply for industrial clusters, with the Idu estate set to benefit first from the phased rollout of gas-powered generation.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Power, also pledged improved power supply to industrial areas across the country within six months, with Abuja, Benin, and Lagos among the locations expected to see gains in electricity availability during that period.
Officials at the ceremony expressed confidence that the project would ease long-standing power challenges faced by manufacturers and industrial operators in the Idu estate, many of whom currently rely on costly alternative sources such as diesel generators to keep operations running.
The groundbreaking marks the formal commencement of construction on phase one of the 50MW project, with government representatives reiterating their commitment to the December deadline for the first 10MW tranche.
