Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, and World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus inaugurated the “Lost Screen Memorial” exhibition on Sunday, May 17. The powerful installation, composed of giant illuminated smartphones, represents 50 children who lost their lives due to harm linked to social media. The event took place in Geneva ahead of the 79th World Health Assembly, drawing attention to the urgent need for greater awareness and action on the risks posed by digital platforms to young people.

“This is not simply a technology issue. It is a public health issue, and a human one,” Markle said during her remarks, emphasizing the far-reaching impact of social media on the well-being of children and families. She went on to ask, “How many more millions of children will be harmed by products that, while innovative, are still designed without sufficient safeguards?”

The exhibition aims to spark dialogue among policymakers, health professionals, and tech companies about the urgent need for safer online environments, particularly for vulnerable young users.
