‘You Can’t Fight It’: Londoners Reflect on the Future in an AI World

Artificial intelligence is moving rapidly from the world of technology into everyday life, prompting growing debate about how far it should go and whether its risks can still be contained. As countries and companies wrestle with the implications of increasingly powerful AI, AFP asked people around the world how they see the technology shaping their future. In central London, flight attendant Paula takes a pragmatic view of what lies ahead. “It is what’s going to be happening, you can’t fight it,” she says.

The debate over artificial intelligence has moved far beyond Silicon Valley, as increasingly powerful systems begin to affect jobs, education, entertainment, healthcare and everyday life. While supporters see AI as a technology capable of transforming economies and solving complex problems, concerns are growing over job displacement, misinformation, cyberattacks and the possibility that increasingly autonomous systems could become difficult for humans to control.

The latest debate has been sharpened by warnings from some of the technology industry’s biggest names. Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei has called for a slower pace of development for advanced AI, with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and Elon Musk among those expressing support for greater caution and stronger safety measures. Their concerns reflect growing unease that AI capabilities are advancing faster than safeguards and oversight.

But the push for a slowdown is running into a competing argument: that restricting AI development could leave countries behind in a global technological race, particularly against China. US President Donald Trump has rejected calls for a broad slowdown, arguing that America needs to maintain its lead in AI. His administration has largely favoured encouraging innovation while addressing specific security risks rather than imposing sweeping restrictions on the industry.

That tension has left governments, technology companies and ordinary citizens facing a difficult question: how do you benefit from a technology that is developing at extraordinary speed while making sure its risks do not outpace society’s ability to manage them?
