Iconic R & B Singer Mary J. Blige has opened up about her decision to remain childfree, revealing that experiences growing up around family members struggling with childcare influenced her choice to prioritise freedom and independence. The Grammy-winning singer, however, says she has sometimes wrestled with mixed feelings about that decision, particularly as she reflects on the companionship and bond that can come with having children.
Speaking on the IMO podcast with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, Blige reflected on how watching family members struggle with childcare while she was growing up influenced her choice not to have children. At the time, she valued the freedom she believed a childfree life would give her, but she admitted that her perspective has evolved, particularly as she has come to appreciate the unique bond between parents and their grown children.
Fear of losing her freedom was one of the biggest factors behind Blige’s decision to remain childfree. Growing up, she watched relatives rely on babysitters and adjust their lives around childcare, experiences that shaped her perception of motherhood and made her value independence. For Blige, having the freedom to make her own choices without the responsibilities of raising children became an important part of the life she wanted for herself.
She acknowledged that choosing a childfree life does not mean she is immune to loneliness. She said there are moments when she feels alone, but over time, she has learned to appreciate her own company and the peace that comes with solitude. Her journey of healing from painful past experiences has also shaped the way she views herself, helping her embrace personal growth and become more comfortable with the life she has chosen.

Blige’s reflections on motherhood and loneliness come against the backdrop of a career defined by resilience, reinvention and personal storytelling. In 2022, she won a Primetime Emmy as part of the team behind the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show and was named among TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world.
She also marked the 25th anniversary of her acclaimed album My Life with the 2021 documentary Mary J. Blige’s My Life, which explored the experiences and struggles that shaped the record and her career.
In 2025, Blige was also nominated for the BET Her Award at the BET Awards for her song “Beautiful People,” adding another recognition to a career that has continued to evolve across music, film and television.
