As Team Nigeria prepares to take the global stage at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the Presidency has charged the contingent to not only aim for the podium but to compete as true ambassadors of national honour and integrity.
Presidential Charge at the State House
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially presented Team Nigeria to the Presidency ahead of the Commonwealth Games holding in Glasgow, Scotland, from the 23rd of July to the 2nd of August, 2026.

During a reception at the State House in Abuja, the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, hosted the delegation on behalf of the President. He assured the contingent that the Federal Government had fulfilled its obligations to ensure adequate preparation.

Gbajabiamila urged the athletes to surpass the nation’s previous best record achieved at the Birmingham Games, while maintaining the highest standard of sportsmanship.
“Compete fairly while also protecting the values of honour and integrity of the country,” The Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila stated, reminding the team of their role as global representatives of the Nigerian spirit
Navigating High Expectations
The NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, noting that the National Organising Committee has taken all necessary steps to secure a successful outing.

Recent social media reports have circulated claims that the NSC leadership promised to “compensate Nigerians for the World Cup loss with medals” at these Games. However, that promise remains unverified, and official statements available so far appear to focus on performance targets and preparation rather than any such direct compensation pledge.
Early provisional lists suggest a robust delegation will carry the green and white flag across various sporting events in Scotland, though the final numbers are undergoing final ratification [VERIFY: Confirmed NOC/NSC roster validating the 72-athlete figure].
