The Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities SSANU has directed its members to commence an indefinite strike from May 1.
The directive is contained in a strike notice dated April 30, jointly signed by NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Mohammad Ibrahim. According to the notice, the industrial action became necessary after representatives of the non-teaching staff in tertiary institutions and the Federal Government failed to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement within the agreed timeline of April 1–30, 2026, as earlier proposed by the Joint Action Committee.
The unions noted that although the government negotiation team appealed for more time to prevent the strike, there were no clear signs that the process would be concluded in time to address the workers’ demands. The development raises concerns over potential disruptions in Nigeria’s tertiary education system as the strike takes effect.
