Pan-African groups in Abuja have marked Africa Day 2026 with a resounding call on continental leaders to fully leverage the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. Advocates argue that maximizing the pact is crucial to driving intra-African trade and strengthening economic integration for the continent’s one-point-four billion citizens.

The call came during a series of vibrant events held across the nation’s capital to commemorate the annual celebration.

This year’s celebration was themed “Unity, Youth, and Sustainable Water for Africa’s Future”.

Speakers at the event emphasized that economic growth must move hand-in-hand with resource sustainability, highlighting the urgent need for improved water security across African communities.

Civil society groups and policymakers noted that while the AfCFTA provides a historic framework for breaking down trade barriers , its success heavily relies on empowering the continent’s massive youth demographic and securing basic infrastructure, including clean water.

“We cannot speak of true economic integration without addressing the fundamental needs of our people. The AfCFTA is our greatest tool for economic liberation, but we must secure our water resources and integrate our youth to make this unity sustainable.”

As the continent looks toward the future, the message from Abuja remains clear, economic policies must prioritize both market integration and environmental resilience to secure lasting prosperity
