The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has fully opened its doors on the Giza Plateau, heralding what President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi calls “a new chapter in history”. After two decades of development, the facility is now operating as a premier destination for global tourists in 2026, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s cultural and economic trajectory.
A Monument to Ancient Civilisation
The museum stands as the largest archaeological institution dedicated to a single civilisation. Spanning approximately 500,000 square metres, it serves as a sophisticated repository for over 100,000 artifacts, including the complete Tutankhamun collection.

“Today, as we celebrate together the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, we are writing a new chapter in the history of the present and the future, in the cause of this ancient homeland,” stated President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi during the official inauguration ceremony.
Driving Economic Transformation
The museum is far more than a prestige project; it is a critical component of Egypt’s economic recovery strategy. By consolidating priceless heritage, authorities aim to revitalise the tourism sector and push annual visitor arrivals toward a target of 30 million by 2030.
