At least 30 people have died after two high-speed trains collided south of Madrid on Wednesday, according to regional authorities. The crash is Spain’s second major high-speed rail disaster this year.
A collision between a Renfe high-speed train and an Iryo service killed at least 30 people in Toledo province on Wednesday morning, the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha said.
The regional authorities told AFP that the death toll had risen from an earlier figure of 10. They warned that the number could increase as rescue teams continued working at the scene.
The collision happened shortly before 09:00 local time, between the towns of Mora and Orgaz, near Urda in Toledo province. Rail infrastructure company Adif said the incident involved trains travelling on the Madrid–Andalusia high-speed line.
Officials said a Renfe train rear-ended an Iryo train. Two Iryo carriages reportedly derailed, with some reports saying they went down an embankment. The cause of the collision has not been officially established.
Adif suspended traffic on the Madrid–Andalusia high-speed rail line after the crash. The line connects Madrid with southern Spain, including Seville.

Emergency services deployed fire crews, helicopters and mobile intensive-care units, according to a spokesperson cited by AFP. Authorities have not yet provided a complete breakdown of the injured.
The crash comes nine months after a January collision near Adamuz, in Córdoba province, killed 46 people. That earlier disaster involved trains operated by the same two companies on the same Madrid–Andalusia corridor.
The repeat disasters are likely to intensify scrutiny of Spain’s railway maintenance, signalling and safety oversight. However, no official finding has linked Wednesday’s collision to the January crash, and investigators have not established a cause.
