The American singer was spared immediate imprisonment after pleading guilty to affray over a 2023 attack on music producer Abraham ‘Abe’ Diaw, with a judge warning that his celebrity status would not earn him preferential treatment.

American R&B singer Chris Brown has been handed an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, over an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub in February 2023.

The 37-year-old singer was sentenced on Monday at Southwark Crown Court after pleading guilty to one count of affray in July. The suspended sentence means he will not serve immediate prison time, although he could face imprisonment if he commits another offence during the suspension period.

Delivering his ruling, Judge Tony Baumgartner described the incident as dangerous, noting that Brown had repeatedly struck Diaw with a glass tequila bottle, including twice on the head.

“The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous,” the judge said, adding that the attack carried the risk of causing more serious injuries than those ultimately sustained.

The attack lasted approximately 20 seconds, according to evidence presented in court, including CCTV footage showing the confrontation.

Diaw was taken to hospital for treatment after sustaining head and knee injuries. The court also heard that he experienced tenderness around his neck and abdomen, alongside reduced movement in his left knee.

Judge Baumgartner said Chris Brown played the leading role in the incident because he initiated the physical violence and used a bottle as a weapon. The judge described the violence as intense despite its short duration.

The court also considered Brown’s previous convictions involving violence in 2009 and 2013, although the judge acknowledged that they were several years old. Other factors considered during sentencing included his guilty plea, stable employment and charitable activities.

Brown’s co-defendant, Akinlolu, also received a suspended sentence. He was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 towards prosecution costs.

The sentencing concludes a legal process that began more than two years after the nightclub incident.

Chris Brown left the United Kingdom following the February 2023 confrontation, and an arrest warrant was subsequently issued in connection with the case.

He was arrested at a hotel in Manchester on May 15, 2025, after returning to Britain ahead of a scheduled performance as part of his international tour.

His arrest raised questions about whether the legal proceedings would affect his tour commitments. Brown was initially refused bail but was later released after agreeing to provide £5 million in security, allowing him to continue with his performances.

The singer initially denied the allegations, which included charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon.

In July 2026, however, Brown pleaded guilty to one count of affray in a deal that saw prosecutors drop the more serious charges.

In 2009, Chris Brown pleaded guilty to assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna, in an incident that drew international attention and prompted widespread public criticism. He was sentenced to five years’ probation and ordered to undertake community service and domestic violence counselling.

He also admitted to a 2013 assault involving a fan who had approached him for a photograph.

The London nightclub case adds to the list of legal issues that have followed the singer throughout his career, renewing public scrutiny of his conduct beyond the music industry.
