Stakeholders have called for practical steps toward the implementation of a common currency within the Economic Community of West African States sub-region during a one-day policy dialogue organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies.

The dialogue examined the prospects and policy implications of adopting a single regional currency, with particular focus on its potential impact on Nigeria and other ECOWAS member states.

Participants stressed that discussions on the proposed ECO currency must move beyond abstract theory to practical implementation, supported by stronger economic convergence, institutional reforms, fiscal discipline, and regional cooperation.

The engagement forms part of ongoing efforts to deepen regional integration, facilitate trade, and promote sustainable economic development across West Africa.
