President Bola Tinubu has signed the National Identity Management Commission Act 2026 into law, marking a significant step toward modernising Nigeria’s identity management framework.

The new legislation is designed to strengthen the operations of the National Identity Management Commission, enhance digital trust, improve the delivery of identity services, and provide stronger protection for citizens’ personal data.

The Act also supports the Federal Government’s broader digital transformation agenda by creating a more secure, efficient, and reliable national identity system capable of supporting economic growth, financial inclusion, and improved public service delivery.

The reform is expected to reinforce confidence in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem while promoting the safe management of citizens’ identity information.
